Creative actions in Hungary to show solidarity with Ukraine

There have been plenty of demonstrations and political statements about the Russian-Ukrainian war in recent weeks, but Hungarian artists have not waited too long to take action either. We have summarised a few creative actions.

Animated video for peace

The Hungarian Animation for Community Purposes group has made a video in which it stands up against the war and in favour of Ukraine, writes 24.hu.

“Our video is intended to show our solidarity through our feelings, and the links in the description are intended to provide sources of help in the country. We support the actions of all those who oppose this war,” commented the creators of the video.

In a petition, Hungarian artists ask for the renaming the Bajza Street metro station to “Ukraine”

The Russian Embassy in Hungary is located at the Bajza Street stop of the millennium metro, so a group of Hungarian artists decided to express their solidarity with the Ukrainian people oppressed by the Russian invasion. The artists thus decided to switch the name of the Bajza Street stop to Ukraine, writes Blikk.

Although the action does not mean an official renaming, the news of the action even reached the mayor of Budapest, Gergely Karácsony, who reacted to the events.

The mayor does not want to remove the boards

Mayor Gergely Karácsony announced on Facebook his decision that until the end of the war, the employees of the Metropolitan Municipality will not remove the nameplates of Ukraine placed at the stop. He said he knew about and supported the initiative even before the action took place.

“A group of artists is initiating the renaming of the Bajza Street metro station near the Russian Embassy to be called “Ukraine”. This is an international action. The goal is to rename the streets where Russian embassies are located in as many cities around the world as possible. I knew about this initiative in advance, and I can promise that until the conflict subsides, the employees of the Metropolitan Municipality will not remove the plaques,” he wrote.

However, according to Telex, we know that the employees of the transport company have already replaced and restored the original nameplate.

Some people help with burgers

The Tuning Group, which operates several restaurants in the capital, is helping to supply thousands of burgers to Ukrainian refugees along the border in Beregsurány and Záhony. According to the article of Kárpáthír.com, the company set up kitchens together with The Bridge for Transcarpathia. The popularity of the initiative is indicated by the fact that fleeing people are standing in long lines, waiting for food. The company decided to set up kitchens because aid organisations say the biggest shortage is hot food at border checkpoints.
